The vast number of similarities
Most of us have at one point or the other indulged in lengthy discussions about how we are different from the other….
My Religion…. My Country…. My City…. My Belief…. My Profession….
It’s invariably ‘me’ Vs ‘you’ or ‘mine’ Vs ‘yours’…. We are either on the defensive or on the offensive… Any which way; we spend untold time and effort trying to showcase our differences…. for the better or for the worse!
I heard a long time back on some TV program that you are more different from yourself as you were two years back than you are from your neighbor today… Not withstanding the validity of the statement itself, how beautiful a concept!!! You are more similar to your neighbor than you think you are… And your neighbor could be anybody!!!
In that context, the phase “Unity in Diversity” almost seems immature to me… What Diversity are we talking about??? The diversity of a thought or of a belief system or of a place of birth or the color or the language…
In the grand scheme, these are so totally inconsequential….
We all laugh for the same things… shed tears for the same things…. bleed the same way…. ache for the same thing…. find solace in similar things…. and love and care in much the same way….
Why not live by the vast number of similarities and simply ignore all things else!!!
