Negotiation…
This is the one skill that is rarely known and sparsely understood amongst professionals…
Of the hundreds of resumes that I must have seen through the years, I have not found this except in those where the job title is “vendor management” or the like.
This much needed skill is required in practically every job…
Think about it!!! You do negotiate… almost everyday…
Whether it is the amount of time you need to finish your tasks… the responsibility that you think you should or should not have… the team you should be a part of… the technology you should be using… the process you should follow… the direction of the company… the dosage of medicine you should use… the homework you want your kids to do… what you want to cook for dinner… where you want to go on a holiday… what car you should buy… how much to spend on a dress… EVERYTHING is negotiation!!!
And Negotiation can get tough!!! Especially in a highly charged group of capable people… butting heads is but expected!
A good negotiator however, keeps discussions from becoming arguments… She drives logic home, she reasons with everyone… She helps everyone understand where to slice the pie… Everyone comes out feeling they got a fair deal… There is clarity and productivity is higher! She has created a Win-Win!!!
