Whether i win or you win, we lose…
Whether i win or you win, we lose…
… if we are a team!
People confuse team mates for adversaries. The disgust most genuine professionals develop for the corporate world can be attributed to this single trait… “I must win over you”. People can go to any extent to win. And this single need trumps all other aspects: morality, ethics, commitment to the organization, etc.
Ironically, this is done under the guise of commitment to the organization, care, etc. People are convinced that their way is the better way, they are more committed and now they must prove to the world that they are the saviors. And it does not end at proving that they are the saviors! Their sincerity automatically means that the other is not!
In a team, no one can ever win against the other without causing the team some damage. I had written yesterday about how a team is a success machine, with each component playing a vital part. Imagine two components competing with each other!
This simple analogy seems to allude most professionals; in fact, the more the experience, the more the baggage!
You can win only when the team does. It might seem for a little while that you are getting your way through a situation and you are proving yourself over your team mate. But be clear, you are either slowly bringing the team down or are paving the path for your exit!
The team must win… and win it will! If you are can contribute as a team player, everyone gets there faster! If you play on the reverse, you will never get there… whether or not the team makes it!
