Unfit to be a Manager!
Being “Structured” and “Organized” is critical to being able to get things done!
I am not talking of that absolutely brilliant nerdy scientist with an unbelievably messy desk that spends his time in seclusion working on his passions all alone and ultimately creates a new world order! Such unearthly intelligence is rare and comes with its set of idiosyncrasies ! If you are one of those…. we will wait and watch and sing your praises for generations to come after you are gone!
For the rest of us, success comes only by etching certain essential traits into our DNA… if they were not poured into our molds by The Creator!
The one critical element, absence which everything we do, takes longer and more effort is… being ‘structured’… being ‘organized’! And unless you are very organized a person, you might as well never get into management!
Management is about being able to expand your personal capabilities into those around you while leveraging their capabilities into accomplishing things that no single person can, in the same amount of time…. And to be able to do so, you must be able to very clearly understand the expected outcome, organize the effort in your own mind, put it on paper as a tangible plan, communicate it to everyone in your team, explain the individual responsibilities of a specific person very clearly, create a transparency and accountability matrix which helps coordinate all of their tasks, and drive this entire vehicle from concept to the realization of the outcome!
All this takes being methodical… being structured… being organized… being disciplined!
If you are one that struggles to be organized, reconsider…. for management is not for you!
At the same level of knowledge, experience and capability, an organized person will always get more done! Management magnifies this manyfold.
If your team is constantly waiting for you to tell them what they must do next, if their understanding of the goal is unclear, if the actual outcome is always lower than the expected outcome, if there is constant confusion in your team and you are yourself lost on what you should really be doing…. Understand that you are unfit to be a manager!
Being organized is not a skill that can be taught… It is a skill that can only be learned!
