Inaccurate Measurements, Incorrect Metrics And Wrong Units of Measure…
Talk about human productivity in this context…. let’s give an instance to each point:
Measure employee effectiveness with the amount of time he spent showing you his face…. the higher the time clock reported, the greater his effectiveness! An insincere person always will come out a winner for he can blatantly lie and you have no counter validation to verify!
When you measure total time spent by the time spent from start to finish, Boult would be the biggest slacker in sports. By the same token, an attorney that is able to win you a case in just one argument deserves the least amount of money! Applying incorrect metrics can go either way!
Seen people that value an experienced engineer at the same level as an experienced brick layer? They are both people, the unit of measure could well be the same! That’s no different from valuing a couple of pounds of diamonds the same as a couple of pounds of salt…. A classic case of using the wrong units of measure!
A matured manager knows which metrics to apply, in what combination, how to measure each metric and is always able to apply the right unit of measure…. He is able to do it in terms of value relative to the outcome as opposed to a silly metric that holds little to no significance in the grand scheme of things!
To apply metrics, one must have at least a little knowledge about that field of work. One must respect professionals and know to measure road layers differently from law makers or trash pockets differently from data scientists.
What would you call a hospital manager that measures surgeons based on how much time they spend in the operation theater?
I call him a 7/8 ounce of foolishness!
