Company before the self….
You are always a part of a larger organism… and it is always more important than you are….
I see a few articles off and on and people talking to younger colleagues about the changing professional ethics that advocate that you should focus on yourself; I find not so successful people passing on misconstrued hypotheses stemming from their own inability to manage unfamiliar situations in their careers as instances where they were taken advantage of or wronged by their companies! And these younger souls taking cue from such advisors and starting their careers off on the wrong foot or changing their course mid-way through, to deliberately become less productive… or start viewing everything that is spoken of by the company’s management through the dusty lens of their seniors… or misinterpreting ‘focus on the self’ as not caring for ones company….
I am not trying to establish here that all companies are run by angels nor am I thrusting forth a view that you become subservient to anything and everything that your management asks you to do….
I am however exhorting you to focus on the growth of your organization… Focus on the growth of your company for then, not only do you learn to play a part in the making of something much bigger than yourself, you also learn the very important aspect of life, i.e., playing a role in a team… doing your job extremely well… while focusing on the ultimate success of the larger whole… your company….
This is no different from placing your family ahead of yourself… or caring for your society with absolute sincerity… or serving your Nation with utmost commitment and love….
Care for your Mother Ship that she may thrive… and if and when you do move on… honor her for she once fed you!
