Are you choosing the right ideas?
The one question you must be able to answer before asking yourself this question is… “What are my or my organizations existing capabilities”?
Not paying attention to this very important question will mean that no matter how well you execute, the risk of failure is markedly higher….
Many people strategize themselves into wrong objectives, for, their existing capabilities do not fit their desired goals and the cost of acquiring those capabilities outruns the cost permissible for the attainment of those goals….
An idea is never right or wrong… it is accomplishable only relative to the person or the group, his or its capabilities, the situation, the budget, the time frame and the ability for the person or group in question to be able to focus on it at the level that it requires….
Therefore, apply these filters as you have press forward with the choice of your ideas or goals or business proposals:
1. Is this idea realistic… is it consistent with the realities of the market place… the environment where I am working?
2. Is it in line with my capabilities and is it even feasible to acquire those skills or capabilities?
3. Is this a profitable proposition… Is there enough money in it?
4. Am I trying to do too many things at the same time or too much in too little a time?
5. Most importantly, does this truly interest me over the long haul?
Life is too short to spend chasing after ideas that cannot be realized…. So choose with care…. choose sensibly…. choose wisely!!!
