The three qualities of a non-manager
There are a lot of articles about what makes a good manager. I want to state three qualities of a person which are sure signs that he cannot manage effectively over the long haul.
- He is not methodical. Being disorganized is an indication that he cannot bring order into his own life. How can he possibly manage others and organize their tasks?
- He cannot communicate clearly. Being a good communicator makes one of the important aspects of effective management. Communication, not just verbal; a manager in today’s world must be able to constantly keep his team informed. He should communicate 360 degrees, via email, documentation, reporting, etc. If he is lazy to write and to put a plan together that can then be relayed to everyone, he cannot manage effectively.
- He struggles with insecurities. If he struggles constantly to find his own spot… to be recognized…. If he is in a constant pursuit of recognition of his own contributions and loses his peace to trivial comparisons and respect demands, he cannot be a manager.
If you recognize one or more of these qualities in a person, know that he is not meant for management.
And should you find these shortcomings in you, be honest to yourself, you either need to cover these gaps in yourself, or, realize that life must move on despite what you want… management is not for you!
