Stage relevance
An important aspect of the professional skills needed in your work sphere is ‘Stage Relevance’. ‘Stage’ here refers to the stage of the business that you are a part of.
Consider an extremely successful CEO of a multi-billion dollar, multi national corporation. He might not be a fit for a startup where has to be hands on with all aspects of daily operation. Being the pizza delivery boy, the supervisor, the finance manager, the sales person, the HR manager, the CTO, the COO and the CEO, all without a secretary to remind him of his next appointment, is not exactly what he may be prepared to handle. The converse is equally true.
It is not too hard to see that the CEO job is a very stage relevant position.
While this term might seemingly apply best to senior business impacting roles, this is one of the biggest issues surrounding professional unrest with most individuals.
For example, as a programmer joining an organization, you must understand the stage of the business that you are joining. The processes, the interactions, the tools and techniques, the documentation, testing and deployments are all stage relevant. If there are gaps between your expectations and how things are being done, consider the stage of the organization before concluding that things should be done differently.
The question that you must be asking is, “is the process stage relevant?”
A more important question is “Do I understand the stage my organization is at?”
If you do not have a good answer to this question, any frustration that you might be dealing with related to your job, may be a result of your lack of this awareness. Take a few minutes and try gaining this understanding. You will be able to right-size your contribution. You will find yourself quickly becoming an agent of success for your organization.
What stage is your organization at? Are you stage relevant?
