The most sought after skill set
Strategy is defining the map…. the starting point, the destination, each milestone/ checkpoint, the path between milestone and milestone, determining what is needed to get from one milestone to the other, defining the criteria based on which the reaching of that milestone may be established and more importantly, creating a plan B… what if this does not work... at each stage!
Creating a thoroughly thought through strategy is extremely important…
Failure of most projects however, is not a result of poor strategy! In fact, 70% of the projects fail because of improper execution.
The art and science of execution is not typically taught… And as good that most experienced managers think they are with execution, they falter while actually trying to execute projects…
Execution calls for a high degree of patience, persistence, maturity and consistency. One has to be very methodical, able to understand the set strategy and more importantly the desired outcome…. be able to see the big picture and be detail oriented at the same time… communicate clearly, understand staffing, be a motivator, be a leader and take the group along through to the destination!!!
(Tomorrow I hope to cover ‘execution’ in greater detail and from a different perspective)
Good managers capable of such execution are a rare breed… Grab them if you are fortunate enough to find them and never let them go!!! The others are replaceable!
