Leaders need Emotional Fortitude…
You might have seen those in your organization that create at least as much damage given their attitude or abrasive natures as they bring value…. they cause internal conflicts… do not get along with the others… undermine the accomplishments of their peers or steal credit from someone else’s work… They demoralize people and lower organizational morale….
And then there are those that have been in the organization for ever… they stop performing as they grow totally comfortable… they know people and they wield an influence… they are immutable….
And if such people are high enough in the organization, they can destroy it!
We speak about Emotional Commitment, Emotional Strength, Emotional Balance, Emotional Intelligence, etc…
You could have all of these but still fall short for lack of Emotional Fortitude!
And this is especially true with Leaders….
As a leader, you must have the nerve to confront such people and take decisive action quickly…. Identifying issues or gaining the knowledge of them does not automatically solve them! Leaders must have the Emotional Fortitude to either neutralize such traits in those people or remove those people if it calls for it…. for, failure to do so, could cost the organization as well as that leader, a lot more than the benefit of retaining them.
Decisiveness is an offshoot of Emotional Fortitude…. look into yourself to determine if your Emotional Quotient covers this extremely important aspect.
