Grow by Rating Yourself
I deliberately stayed away from terms like “Self Evaluation”, “Self Assessment” and the like as I am not talking about your typical HR type surveys which have unfortunately been diminished in their importance in most places to short questionnaires localized in space and time completing which will either set your defenses off against management criticism or let you dump your personal grievances onto your boss!
But the purpose for which these beautiful management practices have been introduced is to enable you to do honest self introspection in a guided manner…. A time when you can ask yourself questions that will let you see where you stand in the areas that matter most in your job… For a true professional who really cares about self improvement and professional development, this is a welcome opportunity as opposed to a forced ritual completing which will get him a raise.
If you are one of those that truly cares about professional or personal development, let me suggest a simple exercise…
Today when you interact with people let’s say at your work or in a social setting, determine who you think would be your PLUS, MINUS and EQUAL!!!
More than likely, you will come up with a different person for each trait!
What will you do to become a PLUS over everyone else in your entourage? (But for that, do you know to identify the traits that actually matter? You may want to read my article on the four types of skills to come up with your list).
Rating yourself/ introspection is a perennial process… For a practitioner of self improvement, this is a life long pursuit…
Growth is always relative… What really matters is… “Are you happy with your own Rating”???
