Emotional commitment is essential for projects to succeed…
How many times have you attended meetings where an agreement seems to have been arrived at and a decision made… but nothing actually happens at the end… the projects simply ends in a slow death… or, the project does not ever take off!
These are meetings where there is no debate based on conviction… a serious lack of a robust stream of ideas and thoughts, clashing around the discussion table, with the aim of letting the project flow in the direction that best enables a successful outcome!!!
When people lack emotional commitment, decisions arrived at are not necessarily honest… They are coated with the desire to please their immediate peers or their bosses at that point in time as opposed to the sincerity of arriving at the right decisions….
Dishonest decisions cannot be corrected during execution!
If leaders and teams are rooted in a culture of emotional dishonesty… be it for gaining instantaneous approval in their immediate circles, or, because they are intimidated by the group dynamics, or hierarchy… they fail to act as a unified, synchronized whole.
An open atmosphere of security and reward for performance and a strong organizational structure with a design of rewards and sanctions, in combination, create the social relationships, the norms of behavior, flows of information and decisions, that go into creating the environment that then enables the security that breeds emotional commitment….
Build such a dynamic in your team/ organization, for then you have the commitment that can help cover all the other lapses that could potentially fail your projects….
