Building and Sustaining
We learn in Engineering that more than 70% of the product cost goes into maintenance and support…. People that have developed and managed large scale products can easily argue that the sustenance cost could actually be a lot higher…
As much as we pride ourselves of building things, sustaining or maintaining what has been built is equally hard; sometimes harder… it requires a different type of a mindset!
I have come to understand that building is more like a sprint where sustaining it is like a marathon…
While both require a certain degree of Intelligence Quotient [IQ] and Emotional Quotient [EQ], it may be reasonable to state that where ones IQ determines how well it is built, EQ determines how well it is maintained and how long it lasts…
This whole concept like anything else applies to everything… Engineering Structures, Software Products, Scientific Studies, Human Relationships, Societal Frameworks, Political Setups…. The list goes on…
Some of us understand IQ better and we do EQ just like we enjoy building or creating more than we do maintaining or nurturing over the long haul…
Every body ultimately has to do both at some level! We better work on and get good at both!!!
