Being forthcoming in leadership
Stuff can go wrong! No person has ever been so good that he has not messed up somewhere, sometime at some level.
Words cannot make up for what has gone wrong. There is no point trying to cover things up. People are smarter than you think. It is only a question of time before your desperate attempts to look like you always had it under control blows up in your face.
Be forthcoming. It is totally acceptable for you to be in charge and for things not to work a few times. You are not going to be branded ‘incompetent’ just because your best efforts did not yield the result that you had hoped for! People may be disappointed, but so are you!
A leader takes responsibility for failures. He does not shy away from owning up to follies no matter where they exist in his team. He has the strength of character to accept that things did not work out, the level-headedness to evaluate what went wrong, the emotional stamina to face the consequences and the maturity to move on with the same level of excitement.
People are forgiving and appreciating! They empathize! They see that if they were disappointed, so were you! You stand to be their leader regardless!
Be forthcoming. Move on to succeeding the next time. Everyone will stand behind you and root for your success!
