A manager’s story
As many stories and articles as there are about bad bosses, the distinction between managers and leaders, etc, the world has a greater number of mediocre employees.
This is a story of the impact of a bad employee on a manager.
An indisciplined, employee who was long associated with an organization, after repeated requests followed by warnings, continued his bad ways.
The manager was frequently short by a resource for this man’s unreliability; his team’s morale suffered; his results fell short.
The manager suffered for this man’s unhealthy presence. He would constantly find himself reprimanding this man to no change; his respect and authority in the rest of his team would constantly stand compromised.
The manager was considerate, like many managers that believe that people ultimately change. He knew that this man had a wife and kids; that his job was their only source of livelihood.
He finally had enough and issued an ultimatum which the man crossed. The manager fired him.
The following day, as the manager was driving to his office, he found the man together with his wife and kids and with long faces and tears in their eyes stop him, requesting that his job be reinstated.
Most managers might relate to this situation.
What should the manager do?
We no longer live in a socialistic communist world. In today’s competitive world that demands high standards; where there is no place for mediocracy, what should be done?
Isn’t the choice obvious?
