The human analogy to reviving organizational health!
Chronic problems take time to heal…. And in most organisms, certain long standing illnesses can never be cured…. If the problem were isolated to a non-vital organ or part of the body, the remedy may be amputation! The part is removed and albeit some inconvenience, the organism lives on! And if it were systemic, natural selection may be, unfortunately, the only way to deliverance!
Where in cases, sustained treatment works… in other cases, the solution may be removing the part to save the life… while in others, it is euthanasia… for that may be the kindest thing to do! Any which way…. It is about the least painful route!
And this rule applies just the same to organizations…. the choice of the approach is but to ensure the least painful route to keeping the organism alive, while making every attempt to ensuring that it gets back to perfect health…. productivity, profitability and growth!
The challenge is to find the right physician that can guide the patient and his family to take all the right decisions and that is almost never easy!
Organizational leaders are but human and they are prone to misguided judgements! Their intentions cannot be questioned in most cases…. The choice of the approach however, is never straight forward!
There will be pain no matter what the route… the outcome is rarely perfect! There could be wrong diagnosis…. There could be advisors that may have ulterior motives… There could be maliciousness… There will be casualties….
But such is life… such is business!
The one difference: It’s not personal!!!
