Setting the agenda Vs adopting the agenda…
Leadership is about commitment to the mission… to walk together with individuals that are capable of accomplishing the set mission…. A leader then knows to bring out the very best in each individual while making the mission worth everyone’s while!
A good manager that considers himself a leader tries to set the agenda for the team in-line with what has to be accomplished…. He becomes a good leader when he learns the art of enabling the development of the agenda, through the collective inputs from the team which everyone including himself then adopts.
You become a great leader when the misconception that a leader is the one that sets the agenda for his team is displaced by the revelation that the leader is the one that adopts the agenda together with his team.
The agenda is set by the whole and not by the one…. it is then, that the whole works as one!
P.S. It could be argued that a democratic approach is not always a practical approach! This non-arguable point is known to a leader that is able to get his team to build an adoptable agenda. Should it be found leading into chaos, with too many butting heads, he knows to put his foot down to set the agenda!
