Right size your “To do list”… Delegate and follow-up!
I recently wrote about the importance of having a “To Do List”. That applies to everyone in general. But if your To Do List is over 2 pages long and you have your items being carried forward day after day… week after week… you are probably doing one of two things wrong, or probably both!
A. Either it is not really a task, rather a project
B. You are treating what should really be delegated and tracked by you as your own task in which case you are not much of a manager!
Most young managers have trouble delegating. Or they delegate and do not know to follow-through….
A good manager knows to right size his To do List…. He then knows to review the To do lists of his team who are all executing his mandate…
In this picture, your To do list would be a short list of no more 4 to 6 items each day that all end up being completed that day…
And do not confuse the To do list with a strategy document or an execution plan…. The To do list is just a daily map that will get you from point ‘K’ to point ‘L’ in your larger scheme of execution towards accomplishing your goals….
Right size your To do lists…. Learn the art of delegation which always has to be accompanied by effective inspection….
It’s ultimately your mandate that needs to get accomplished!!!
