Reinventing the wheel….
A few days back I had written an article about doing it right the first time. “You never have time to do it right the first time but you always find time to do it over and over”.
You have, at a minimum ‘discovered the wheel’… the key to doing it well in your profession. If you are not there yet, you probably need to work on getting there first.
Notwithstanding that, you can still explain to someone else how it has to be done. You know the theory… you have discovered the wheel.
What’s relevant then is, are you rebuilding it each time? Unless you are in a job that has nothing but repeating the same thing over and over, you know there must be a better way!
Not having to reinvent the wheel is about discovering that common thread… those sets of tasks that you have to do over and over. It is then about finding a smart way of rendering those tasks redundant or automating them.
It’s not about using the right words! It is about putting your learnings into practice. And the best learnings typically come from your own experiences. And experience is best gained by observing yourself as you conduct yourself through your job… through your daily routine.
To get yourself ahead of the game, ask yourself if you are reinventing or rebuilding the wheel each time… that’s probably the where you are putting your growth on a leash.
