Do not get into management if you do not have clarity
Management in essence, is doing two things:
1. Clarifying what has to be done to your team
2. Supporting them in accomplishing it
Do not get into management if you are not clear about what has to be done: You will create more work for them, not meet your targets and create more chaos all around.
Being clear does not mean being able to articulate your job description and the project definition and goal concisely. It means being able to understand the direction of the organization, understanding the organizational structure, the people that are involved and then the project/program that you have been charged to manage. It involves being clear about where you and your group fit and having absolute clearly about the role that your group and as a result, each individual in your group must play.
Things are almost never perfect. There may be blurry lines. It is likely that you are not given all the details that you might need. Your management may not be able to give you the clarity that you seek.
A good manager is able to bring method into madness.
He can bring clarity!
Are you a person that can create clarity in your own mind and pass it on to everyone around you? Else, management is not for you.
