Job Description: Human or Robot
Engineering can be at two levels:
1. You can build to a requirement
2. You can build to an outcome
Building to an outcome invariably yields a better product because the mindset of the engineers building for the desired outcome transcends the limitations associated with merely understanding requirements.
Every job is an Engineering feat at some level… There is planning, there is design, there is execution, there is creation of value and constant delivery of something important/ the product.
A job description then, is about what is expected of that role in terms of achieving an outcome.
When a self-proclaimed seasoned professional starts debating what’s a part of his job description and what is not, he is invariably turning a blind eye to the purpose of his role, i.e., the expected outcome.
Job descriptions are about outcomes… they are about the value that a person needs to add. Anything else is but a series of repeatable tasks that will ultimately be offloaded to an automation program or a robot.
If you are human, focus on the value you can bring… work for the outcome! Want to debate it instead? There is a robot to back fill your job.
