Fair does not mean equal or same
‘Being Fair’ is to give what one needs to succeed. It is often mistaken for giving everyone the same thing, a similar level of enablement, equal reward, equal penalty.
There can be nothing farther from fair treatment than to give a physician and a butcher the same knife to do their jobs. While this might seem like an extreme comparison, if you think deeply, you will be surprised at the sheer volume of unfair demands that are made under the guise of fair treatment.
A good leader is one that educates the ones displaying resentment stemming from inaccurate conclusions drawn on what is unfair. It’s the weak leader or the opportunistic politician that gives into such demands either because they tend to gain from feeding such misgivings or because they lack the courage of conviction.
If you are a leader, think of what is truly fair and have the strength to do that. And if you are the one making a demand for fair treatment, do so only if you are convinced that you would rule in your favor, if you were that strong leader.
Does that sound fair?
