Be Yourself! Be Original!!
Who was your role model growing up? Who did you want to be like? And who do you want to be like now?
You may recall yourself saying as a kid, “When I grow up, I want to be just like him”. And in your youth, you would probably have said something like, “I will inspire people just like he does”… or, “I will become a doctor and save peoples’ lives just like him”!
You have been blessed to be preview to people that you would love to emulate… they inspire you… they either directly or indirectly influence you… the path that you end up taking, the line of study or the type of trade you end up choosing!
You have been built to learn by observing and listening…. And then there are those amazing intellectual and creative endowments that help you string the various chords that you pick up along the way into your own melodious tune!
I have seen grown ups say, “I want to build a company just like Google”… “I want to become a global change agent just like Steve Jobs”, etc.
If you find yourself saying such things, I think you are holding on to your childhood a little too long!
Greatness can be achieved only by being Great… Not by being like someone else! By wanting to be like someone else, you are, in a way, focusing on a person as opposed to a greater dream…. It sets a limit to how much you want to or can achieve….
You might well surpass that man some day… you are still limiting your achievements only relative to someone else! Is that the best you could have done? You may never know!!!
Learn about what others have done, read history…. Gather all the data points of what worked, what did not… how people behaved… gain insights into what their environment was like at the time they took the decisions that they took…. But at the end, only those learnings apply to you… Not the specifics!
Nature has made absolutely everything unique! No two grains of sand are alike…. And you are as much subject to Her Law!
Be Unique… Be Yourself… Be Original…. The dreams are yours and just as original.
