Smart work is the application of thought to maximize the resultant output from a set quantum of labor….
When you are not satisfied with your productivity or the outcomes that you have been getting over a span of time, the usual tendency would be to try to put in more effort… work longer hours!
The only fruit of such bull-headed stubbornness without application of your smarts would be eventual burn out!
A long time back, a Sr. Principal Engineer with over 25 years of experience explained how she had all her days taken up be a manual data cleanup process that she was entrusted to ensure that all of it made it in its cleanest form into a “new system” that was introduced about 3 years ago. When questioned why she did not create an automated routine to do it, she first looked at me like I was out of my mind and then got mad for me not recognizing how diligent she was everyday over the past three years. She was let go by the organization when we had another Engineer with about 2 years of experience volunteer to create an automation routine to clean up and load that data from the old to the new system (a poor man’s version of an ETL tool… Extract, Transform, Load), without human involvement.
Your experience counts for nothing as long as you refuse to apply your smarts. It is a world where what matters is how quickly you can do it, how cost effectively and how you can guarantee quality in so doing.
And it is not just at an individual level… this today, is where the entire world is going! It is about being smart and open to this reality… it is about becoming aware, learning, adapting and being very good at being smart!
